SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The Challenge

Sustainable livelihoods in Melghat must balance economic needs with ecological responsibility. Traditional livelihoods were disrupted by forest restrictions. New “development” often meant exploitation—of people and nature.

Communities needed alternatives that respected their knowledge, protected the environment, and provided dignified incomes.

Our Response

We support community-led livelihood initiatives that work with nature, not against it—creating economic opportunities while restoring ecological health.

What We Do

Organic Farming Support: Promoting chemical-free agriculture, particularly organic sitaphal (custard apple) cultivation, which has become a successful model in villages like Payvihir.

Sustainable Forest Products: Supporting traditional, sustainable harvesting of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) like tendu leaves, honey, medicinal plants, and bamboo—ensuring communities benefit from resources they’ve always managed.

Community-Based Natural Resource Management: Helping communities develop sustainable harvesting practices that maintain biodiversity while providing livelihoods.

Market Linkages: Connecting producers with fair markets for organic and forest products.

Skill Development: Training programs in sustainable agriculture, forest management, value addition, and entrepreneurship.

Women’s Collectives: Supporting women-led initiatives and self-help groups for economic empowerment.
